Municipalities use the words zone and area interchangeably, and that makes it confusing. For you as a driver the distinction is simple: an area is the larger part of town where paid parking applies, a zone is the part within it for which one rate, one set of paid hours and one zone code apply. You always start your session in a zone.
Area
An area is how the municipality organises its parking policy: "centre", "ring" or "east". Within an area the same rules for permits and visitor schemes usually apply. The municipality's website usually shows a map of these areas and their colours.
Zone
Within an area lie one or more zones. Each zone has its own code, shown on the signs and machines, and its own rate. In a small town the whole centre is one zone. In a large city one area can consist of dozens of zones, sometimes a different one every few streets, with a different rate.
Why this matters to you
- The rate. Two zones in the same area can have different rates. One street on can be cheaper.
- The maximum duration. It applies per zone. In one zone you may stay two hours, in the zone next door all day. Where the municipality enforces a strict maximum, the app says End time is fixed and you cannot pick the end time yourself.
- Enforcement. Checks are done by zone code. Pay in zone 1201 while your car is in 1202 and you are unpaid, even though both are "centre".
Recognising zone boundaries
A zone boundary is often on a junction or a square. The signs on either side then carry a different code. Look at the sign closest to your car, on your side of the street. See Finding the zone code on the street.
Permit areas
In a permit area residents with a permit may park. Visitors can often still pay to park in the same area; the sign then shows a zone code with paid hours. If it only says "vergunninghouders" (permit holders), you cannot park there as a visitor, not even with a session. The app then does not show such a spot as a paid zone either.
