Where to park in Assen
Assen makes it easy if you know what you have come to do. For a short errand in the city centre you park on the street: € 2.50 per hour, billed per twelve minutes, with a maximum of 120 minutes. If you want to stay longer, the parking sites at Kanaalstraat, Stelling, Oude Molenstraat and Zuidersingel are a better choice, because there you may stand 240 minutes. And if you are really in town for a day, you drive to the Veemarktterrein or Industrieweg: there you pay € 1.80 per hour, no maximum stay applies and € 6.00 is the most you spend in a day.
Besides that there are seven car parks close to the centre: Mercurius, Neptunus, Triade, Citadel, Stadhuis, Drents Museum and De Nieuwe Kolk. There too you never pay more than € 8.00 per calendar day.
Paid hours, market and Sunday
Paid parking applies Monday to Thursday from 9.00 to 18.00, on Friday through to 21.00 and on Saturday again until 18.00. On Sunday parking is free in most places; only in permit-holder zones 1 to 8 you pay that day between 12.00 and 18.00. For public holidays Assen makes no exception.
Watch the market. On Wednesday and Saturday it stands in the city and part of Nieuwehuizen closes; on Wednesday you cannot pay to park there between 9.00 and 18.00.
Paying and enforcement
On the street you park by licence plate. You buy a ticket at the meter or you start a session with your phone; your plate is registered digitally and the parking officer scans it to see whether payment has been made. With mobile parking you only pay for the time your car was actually there. With SimplePark you start the session when you come to a stop and stop it when you drive away, so you pay per minute, handy in a city where the street rates are counted per twelve or ten minutes.
