Where to park in Drachten
The regulated area in Drachten is small and sits tightly around the shopping centre. You have three flavours there: paid parking, a blue zone and permit zones. It is paid in the two car parks on Raadhuisplein and Van Knobelsdorffplein, on parking sites such as Sander Israëlsplein, De Markt and Kiryat Onoplein, and at the spots where a parking meter stands.
The hourly rate is the same everywhere, inside and outside the car park. The difference is in the day rate: if you stay a full day, you are considerably cheaper in the car park than on a parking site. For a day of shopping or working in the centre the car park is therefore almost always the better choice.
Free parking and the blue zone
Around the paid area there is plenty of space where it costs nothing. The parking bays along Leerlooiersstraat and Moleneind NZ, the site on Nachtegaalstraat, the site at VV Drachten, De Singel and Oliemolenstraat are free. On De Opgang that applies to part of the site; look carefully at the signs there, because on the other part you have to pay.
At Moleneind sits the blue zone. There you park three hours free with a parking disc, which is plenty for this side of the centre. The car parks are open from Monday to Saturday from 7.00 to 21.00 and on Sunday from 11.00 to 20.00; you can exit day and night, so your car is never stuck there.
Paying and enforcement
Parking management in Smallingerland is in the hands of P1: that company maintains the meters and carries out the checks. The municipality itself remains in charge of the rules, the opening hours and the rates, so nothing changes for you as a visitor in what you pay. You can pay at the meter or with an app. With SimplePark you start the session as soon as you stop and you stop it when you drive off; you pay by the minute and therefore do not have to estimate in advance how long you will stay in the centre.
