Where to park in Harlingen

In Harlingen, parking gets dearer the closer you get to the water and the shops, and you can use that logic as a visitor. If you are coming from outside town, the outer ring around the center is by far the cheapest: around Spoorstraat, Nieuwe Willemshaven, Nieuwe Vissershaven and the station you pay € 0.35 per hour for the first 8 hours, with a day rate of € 10.00. From there you walk straight into the historic city center and the harbors.

If you want to park right in the middle of things, the city center costs € 1.10 per hour for the first 4 hours and the rate rises after that. Voorstraat is the dearest of all: it is meant for a short stop and not for a day. The vignette area is the cheapest, at € 0.25 per hour. If you stay longer than a few hours, look at the day rate of the area where you have parked, because that makes a real difference.

Paid hours, Sunday and the ferry

Paid parking applies from Monday to Saturday between 9.00 and 20.00. On Sunday you park for free in most places; Waddenpromenade car park and the camper pitches are the exception. On public holidays parking is also free at many locations. If you are traveling on to Terschelling or Vlieland, the long-stay car parks on the north side of the town are the place to go: a fixed day rate, including shuttle bus to the ferry terminal. At a number of schools and sports clubs there is a blue zone; what is allowed there is on the sign.

License-plate parking and the scan car

Harlingen works with license-plate parking. At the meter you enter your license plate and pay by debit card, coins are not possible, and you do not get a ticket to put behind the windscreen. Checks are done with a scan car that drives along all paid spaces during paid hours; if it finds no valid payment, an enforcement officer comes by.
