Where to park in Franeker
Paid parking in the municipality of Waadhoeke centers on Franeker. The center is split into two areas, A and B, which you find on the municipality's map and on the information screen of the parking meter. If you want to park right by the shops and the town canal, you end up in one of those two areas.
If you stay longer than a quick errand, the center is not the most practical spot. Just outside the center there are car parks where the long-stay spaces are free. Watch the sites on Leeuwarderweg and Hertog van Saxenlaan: part of those is a blue zone, so you need a parking disc behind the windscreen. Where you may park without a disc and without paying is marked on the site itself.
The rate goes up
Since 1 January 2026 Franeker charges a progressive rate: the hour gets more expensive the longer you stay. In area A you pay € 0.70 per hour for the first 4 hours; then it jumps to € 2.80 per hour. In area B the cheap stretch is shorter: 2 hours at € 1.40 per hour, then € 5.60 per hour. The idea is that short visits to the center stay cheap and that long-stay parkers move to the car parks outside the center.
You pay from Monday to Thursday and on Saturday between 10.00 and 18.00, and on Friday until 21.00. Outside those hours parking on the street is free.
Watch your parking action
At the meter you pay in advance: you see straight away what your chosen parking time costs. If you use an app, the municipality warns that your parking action keeps running for as long as you stay parked. It no longer stops automatically at the maximum parking time. Overpaid parking charges are not refunded, not even if you paid for the wrong registration.
