Where to park in Maastricht
Maastricht is divided into two rate zones. The A-zone is the centre, split into A1 and A2, and there you pay the high rate of € 3.70 per hour. The B-zone lies outside the singels and costs € 1.90 per hour. A day ticket costs € 8.30, except at places with a maximum stay. If you come for a day's shopping or a museum, a car park or a P+R is often wiser than the street: at P+R Maastricht Noord and P+R Bunde you park for free and continue by public transport.
Allow for the low-traffic Wyckerbrugstraat: from Monday to Friday it is closed from 18:00 in the evening until 7:00 the next morning, and from Saturday 18:00 until Monday 7:00. On Sunday the street is therefore low-traffic all day. Nearby car parks remain accessible as usual.
The progressive rate
What makes Maastricht distinctive is that the hourly rate rises at a number of locations. You pay a base rate there for the first hours, and anyone who stays longer pays more per hour; the maximum stay no longer applies at those places. The municipality does this to keep on-street spaces free and send long-stay parkers to the car parks. In most areas the hourly rate simply stays the same.
You pay from Monday to Wednesday and on Friday and Saturday between 8:00 and 18:00, on Thursday, late-night shopping, until 21:00, and on Sunday between 12:00 and 18:00. On public holidays when the shops are closed, you do not have to pay on-street; in a commercial car park you do. In December watch the extra late-night shopping evenings: paid parking then applies on-street as usual.
Licence-plate parking and enforcement
The meters in Maastricht work by licence plate, including foreign plates, and a ticket behind your windscreen is no longer needed.
