Short-stay in the centre, longer on the edge
Vaals arranges parking in the centre with combi parking: on the same on-street spaces stand permit holders and visitors with a ticket from the meter. For the resident there is no time limit, for the visitor there is. With a parking ticket you may stay a maximum of 90 minutes, and that ticket costs € 0.25 per 10 minutes. Enough for an errand or a terrace, not for an afternoon walk to the Drielandenpunt.
If you want to stay longer, there are five spots that are meant for that: the car park under Prins Willem Alexanderplein with the entrance on Beemderlaan, the car park on Sint Paulusstraat ('t Sjanes), Lindenstraat behind the church, the site at Drieland shopping centre on Kerkstraat and the one at the Nederlands Hervormde Kerk, also on Kerkstraat.
Every day, including Sunday
The scheme runs from Monday to Sunday between 9:00 and 18:00. Vaals therefore makes no exception for the weekend, logical in a border town where it is busiest on Saturday and Sunday. Outside those hours you do not need to buy a ticket.
On the maps the municipality publishes you see in colour which regime applies where: red is combi parking, green is paid parking where only a ticket from the meter is valid, and blue is blue zone, where you may stand only with a parking disc. On the special disabled parking spaces you park three hours free with a European disabled parking card, provided you use a blue disc; a sign indicates that on the spot.
Paying without overstaying
Because you may only stay an hour and a half in the combi-parking area, the end time of your ticket matters more than the amount. At the meter you buy a block of time in advance; if you are back later, that is an additional parking-tax assessment.
