Where to park in Dokkum

Dokkum's historic city centre sits inside the ramparts, and at the four places where the city gates once stood there is now room to put your car. From de Harddraver car park you walk into town over the Halvemaanspoort, from De Helling via the pedestrian bridge or the centuries-old Hanspoort, from the Panwurk over the Aalsumerpoort and from Lutjebleek via the Woudpoortbrug. All four are free and a short walk from the centre.

In the city centre itself paid parking applies, but only later in the day: until 11:00 your car stands there free. Anyone popping in for a morning errand therefore pays nothing. The rates differ per car park, so always check on the meter what applies at your spot.

Parking disc and edge parking

Part of De Helling car park on the Hellingpad is a blue zone. If you stand there, put your parking disc visibly behind the windscreen with your arrival time on it. On the other sites that is not needed. If you come for a whole day in Dokkum, an edge car park is the easiest choice: you pay nothing, you may stay as long as you like and you walk into the fortress in a few minutes. A circuit of the ramparts brings you back to the car.

Paying with your phone

In a number of areas in Dokkum you can only park by phone; there is then no meter you can use. If you have not set up such an app yet, the municipality is clear about it: look for another meter in the area, or park for free at the edge. With SimplePark you start your session as soon as you stop and stop it when you drive off, so you pay per minute and do not have to estimate how long you will stay in the city centre.
