Where to park in Haarlem

Haarlem works with five parking zones, and the gap between the most expensive and the cheapest is almost a factor of five. The centre is the dearest, the North, West, South and East ring sits in between, and Schalkwijk is by far the cheapest. If you come for the Grote Markt and are not waiting for the centre hourly rate, you can therefore park a little further out and walk the last stretch.

The city has seven public car parks, all with licence-plate recognition and all with a daily maximum. That often makes a car park cheaper than the street on a long visit: in the centre the street meter keeps running, while a car park stops counting at some point. Floridastraat at Winkelcentrum Schalkwijk is the cheapest; Raaks, Houtplein and De Kamp sit in the mid range; Appelaar on Damstraat is the dearest.

Until when you pay and the Stop&Shop streets

Paid parking runs in all zones until 23.00, from Monday to Saturday from 9.00 and on Sunday from 13.00. So Sunday is not a free day in Haarlem; most public holidays are, with Good Friday as the exception.

In the shopping streets of North and West a separate short-stay scheme applies, Stop&Shop: the first half hour is cheaper there, meant for a quick shop. That applies among others in Generaal Cronjéstraat, at Julianapark, Van Ostadestraat and on part of Zijlweg. Further, the city centre is largely a permit-holder area, and many streets in the centre are a pedestrian area where you may not park at all.

Paying and enforcement

On the street you pay at the meter or with an app; in the car parks it goes by licence plate and you pay by the minute. If you have paid too much, you can file a request for repayment with the municipality.

With SimplePark you start your session as soon as you stop and you stop it when you drive away, and you settle by the minute. In the centre, where every quarter of an hour counts, that is the difference between paying for your visit and paying for your margin.
