Where to park in Nijmegen
Nijmegen has six car parks and ten parking sites in and around the center, plus three P+R sites at the edges of the city. On the approach roads, signs count down how many spaces are free, so you do not have to drive around. If you come for the city center, the Waalkade or a performance, a garage is almost always the calmest choice; on-street you also pay more the closer you park to the center.
The big difference in Nijmegen is the time of day. Between 8:00 and 18:00 a garage costs € 3.90 per hour, but between 18:00 and 8:00 only € 0.50. If you go out for dinner or to the theater in the evening, you therefore pay only a fraction of the daytime rate in a car park. In the Eiermarkt, Mariënburg and Keizer Karel car parks a maximum of € 16 per 24 hours also applies.
Zones, sites and P+R
For on-street parking Nijmegen works with areas that each have their own rate and hours; on the municipality's map you click an area to see what applies. A day ticket does not exist there: you pay for exactly the time you are parked. The parking sites are all open 24 hours a day except the Molenpoort, and the three P+R sites too: Nijmegen Noord, Eerste Oude Heselaan and Nijmegen West. At a P+R you do not necessarily have to switch to public transport; you may also simply park and pay at the meter when you return.
License plate, parking action and parking fine (naheffingsaanslag)
On-street and on the sites you pay at the meter or with a parking app. Make sure your license plate is correct: if a meter is broken, you report that and still pay via another meter or via your phone. On which public holidays do you park for free in Nijmegen?
On New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Whit Sunday and Christmas Day. On all other public holidays the normal rate applies. The public-holiday arrangement does not apply to the Triavium and de Vereeniging car parks.
Can I buy a day ticket for on-street parking in Nijmegen?
No. On-street you pay for the time you are parked there; a day ticket is not possible. If you want to stay a day or longer, you are better off in the Eiermarkt, Mariënburg or Keizer Karel car park, where the maximum is € 16 per 24 hours. Businesses can apply for a multi-day ticket for a maximum of 3 months.
