Where to park in Nijmegen

Nijmegen has six car parks and ten parking sites in and around the centre, plus three P+R sites at the edges of the city. On the approach roads, signs count down how many spaces are free, so you do not have to drive around. If you come for the city centre, the Waalkade or a performance, a garage is almost always the calmest choice; on-street you also pay more the closer you park to the centre.

The big difference in Nijmegen is the time of day. Between 8:00 and 18:00 a garage costs € 3.90 per hour, but between 18:00 and 8:00 only € 0.50. If you go out for dinner or to the theatre in the evening, you pay a few tens of euros less than you would expect. In the Eiermarkt, Mariënburg and Keizer Karel car parks a maximum of € 16 per 24 hours also applies.

Zones, sites and P+R

For on-street parking Nijmegen works with areas that each have their own rate and hours; on the municipality's map you click an area to see what applies. A day ticket does not exist there: you pay exactly for the time you stand. The parking sites are all open 24 hours a day except the Molenpoort, and the three P+R sites too: Nijmegen Noord, Eerste Oude Heselaan and Nijmegen West. At a P+R you do not necessarily have to switch to public transport; you may also simply park and pay at the meter when you return.

Licence plate, session and additional parking-tax assessment

On-street and on the sites you pay at the meter or with a parking app. Make sure your licence plate is correct: if a meter is broken, you report that and still pay via another meter or via your phone. With SimplePark you start the session as soon as you stop and stop it when you drive off, so you pay per minute. That is convenient in a city where the evening rate is so much lower than the day rate.
