Where to park in Oldenzaal
Oldenzaal keeps it simple: since 2021 there is only one zone for paid parking in the city center. Wherever you park within that zone, you pay the same. There are also streets where you may only park with a parking permit; those are indicated with signs, and on the municipality's parking guide you see at a glance which part of the city center is what.
What makes Oldenzaal distinctive is that the rate decreases. The first and the second hour cost € 1.45, the third to the fifth hour € 1.00, and after that the rest of the day is free. Anyone who stays longer than about 5 hours therefore automatically ends up at the day rate of € 5.90. For a longer stay there is also De Driehoek car park, but that is privately owned: the rates there are not set by the municipality.
Paid hours and free days
Paid parking applies from Monday to Saturday between 9:00 and 18:00, plus on Friday evening from 18:00 to 21:00. That Friday evening is the only paid evening; on the other days you park for free after closing time. On official public holidays parking in Oldenzaal is completely free: New Year's Day, King's Day, Easter Monday, Whit Monday, 5 May, Ascension Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Parking by license plate
At the meter you first enter your license plate and then choose your payment method: coins or card, contactless or with the card in the reader. You no longer get a ticket, so after paying you do not have to go back to your car. Do make sure you have your license plate to hand; a photo on your phone saves fumbling at the meter.
If you do not want to go to the meter at all, you start a parking action in a parking app. With SimplePark you start as soon as you have parked and stop as soon as you drive off, and you only pay for the time you are parked, in the time steps the municipality bills in. That is handy in a town where the rate changes per hour: you do not have to estimate in advance how long you will stay.
