Parking in Zaanstad

Where you have to pay in Zaanstad
Zaanstad is a municipality of several towns, and you notice that in the parking. There are areas with paid parking, blue zones in the shopping streets and beyond that spots where you simply park for free. Where you have to pay and what it costs is on the municipality's rates map and on the sign at the meter. In the paid-parking areas you can settle at the parking meter, with your phone or with a permit.
Besides on-street parking there are car parks and garages. On De Burcht and Behouden Haven you buy a day ticket at a day rate, but you can also pay per hour. The Rozenhof and Hermitage car parks are managed by Q-Park and the car park at the Zaantheater by the theatre itself; so their own rates apply there. Watch the Ebbehof car park behind the supermarket: that is not a public municipal site, it is closed with barriers and pay-by-phone does not work there.
Blue zones and public holidays
In the blue zones of Krommenie, Wormerveer, Guisweg and Raadhuisstraat in Zaandijk and Zuiddijk in Zaandam you park two hours free with a parking disc. That rule applies from Monday to Saturday between 9.00 and 19.00. Set the disc to your arrival time and put it down clearly visible; enforcement walks past here several times a day and you may not reset the disc without first driving away. On a list of public holidays you do not have to pay in Zaanstad, including New Year's Day, both Easter days, King's Day, Liberation Day, Ascension Day, both Whit days, both Christmas days and New Year's Eve.
Paying and enforcement
The municipality checks with a scan car. That reads your licence plate, so you no longer need to put a ticket behind your windscreen: at the meter you type in your licence plate, and with pay-by-phone your licence plate is already registered.
