When does a session end by itself?

Two things end a parking session without you doing anything: your own end time and the municipality maximum. This is what you get to see.

Updated September 8, 2026

A parking session can end in two ways without you tapping Stop: because the end time attached to the session is reached, or because you hit the municipality's maximum parking duration. In both cases you get a push notification and an email, and the price is recalculated over the time you actually stood there. There is no "stop automatically" setting; what you set is the End time of that one session.

1. The end time you set

Every session carries an end time from the start, chosen by you with Set end time. Once that moment arrives, our servers close the session and deregister your plate, even if your phone is off or the app is closed. You then get an email that your parking activity was stopped automatically because the preset end time was reached, and on your phone the notification "Your parking activity was stopped automatically according to your preset end time." How to choose that end time is in Setting an end time in advance.

2. The municipality's maximum duration

If the zone has a maximum parking duration, your session ends at that moment at the latest, even if you wanted a later time. The app warns about it in advance with End time is fixed. The email afterwards says that your parking activity was stopped automatically because the maximum parking time was reached: "You have reached the maximum parking duration in zone … This limitation is set by the municipality." Note that your car is unpaid from then on. See Maximum parking duration.

What you hear beforehand

notificationdefaultcan be set to
warning that your session ends soon15 min ahead5 to 60 minutes
reminder that your session runsevery hour15 min to 4 hours

You set both moments under Profile › Notifications, at Parking ends soon and Active parking action. Each group has a Push notification toggle and an Email toggle. The advance warning arrives as a push notification by default; the matching email is off by default. The reminder that your session is running has a push channel only.

What does not stop a session

Closing the app, switching your phone off or driving away ends nothing: the session runs until its end time or until you stop it. Leaving the zone changes nothing either. Only you, your end time or the maximum duration end a session. Very occasionally we do, if something goes wrong; you then get an email that your parking activity has ended.

Stopping earlier is always allowed

An end time is a maximum, not an obligation. If you are back earlier, just stop yourself with Stop action or Stop. The price is recalculated over the time you actually parked and the difference stays on your account as credit. See Stopping a parking session.
