Direct debit reversed

A reversed or failed direct debit becomes an open invoice you pay yourself. Why a debit goes wrong, what it means for you and how to prevent it.

Updated September 8, 2026

A reversal is a direct debit that was returned: by you, by the account holder or by your bank. A debit that could not be executed at all, because of insufficient funds for instance, falls under this too. In both cases the amount stays on your account as an open invoice, and until it is paid you cannot park.

What happens after a failed debit

If the debit fails, you get an email that the direct debit failed and that action is required: "Unfortunately the direct debit failed. Possible reasons include insufficient funds or changed bank details." Important detail: we make no second attempt. The amount will not be taken from your account later on. You pay it yourself, through the Pay outstanding amount button in that email or in the app.

If there is no valid mandate left, the email says that your direct debit mandate is missing and that action is required. If you reverse an amount that was already collected, an email follows that your payment has been reversed: "You cannot park with SimplePark until you have manually paid."

How to resolve it

  1. Open the app and go to Profile › Invoices › Payments, or tap the alert on the map.
  2. Open the outstanding invoice and tap Pay now.
  3. Then check under Balance › Linked accounts whether the linked account is still correct.

Why a debit fails

  • Insufficient funds on the linked account at the moment of collection.
  • Direct debit block at your bank, general or specifically for SimplePark.
  • Account closed or changed without linking the new account in the app.
  • Mandate expired. A mandate lapses 36 months after you gave it; after that you link your account again.
  • Reversal by you or the account holder, for example because the amount was not recognised.

Consequences for your account

If you would rather not pay afterwards following a reversal, switch Automatic debit off under Balance and top up in advance again through Balance › Top up. If you do not pay the open invoice, day 14 brings a formal notice of default with a second payment period, day 21 a second and final formal reminder, and day 30 a handover to a collection agency with collection costs and interest on top. See Account blocked by an outstanding amount.

How to prevent a reversal

We collect around the end of the month. Beforehand you get an email announcing the upcoming direct debit; it names the amount, the account we debit and that it will happen in the coming week. If you reach the threshold amount in between, we collect earlier and that email also says that you have reached the billing threshold.

  • Make sure there is enough money in the linked account as soon as you get the announcement.
  • Allow SimplePark debits at your bank if you use a direct debit block.
  • Link a new bank account straight away under Balance › Linked accounts. See Changing or removing a payment method.

Wrongly debited?

If a debit does not match your parking sessions, do not reverse it but email [email protected] with the invoice reference. We look into it and correct the amount if a mistake was made. That way you avoid a block and keep direct debit available.
